June news

Oklahoma Sugar Art show and Wedding cake competition, does that ring a bell?
If not, wait until October 2008 and I'll show you what I am talking about :-)
I really REALLY and I mean R-E-A-L-L-Y hope to go! If I do, I'll provide you guys with updates and pictures :-) I promise!
If anyone per chance has love for cakes and is going too- leave me a comment, maybe we can exchange information!

Now, no to keep you in the dark, I am working on perfecting my bagels! I've been doing this for couple of weeks, they are still not the perfect ones I wish to make! But I am getting there, no worries! Once I do, I'll post step by step instruction and pictures. Until now, all my neighbours are very happy I continue with the experiments :-)

Another thing I started is promoting the idea of a cake challenge at the Bulgarian forum I am a member of. It is going to be in July and I will keep you posted with news and pictures of the stuff I make.

Until then, I am keeping busy busy, busy and " thinking Bee" ( by the way great movie " the bee movie" !) !

Have a nice summer!

how do you do it? make these beautiful cakes with two little ones running around. please don't say you stay up all night long to do them either. I have a 3 1/2 yr old boy and a 15 month old girl and it is sometimes frustrating and impossible! how do you do it?

Well, I do stay up all night if I have to :-) The truth is I am trying to avoid this because the next day I feel exhausted, since the kids don't usually say " Oh, Mommy, you stayed up all night, let's sleep all day" :-). First, I try not to do everything on the same day.I've done it, it's a suicide. Whatever decoration I can make in advance, I make it. I bake the layers at least 2 days in advance as well, then I freeze them. I do this when the kids go to bed ( around 8.30-9pm) and whatever I can finish before 11.30-12 am, that is it for the night. If I can, I avoid putting together the cake less than 24 hours before the event, because things happen, and they do tend to happen exactly when you have a little time before the presentation.
But sometimes, yes...it is frustrating and impossible, and you have to learn to curse in foreign languages, so the kids won't know what you are saying :-) But there is a light in the tunnel! The Buzz Lightyear cake that I made, these kids were out of this world! They were so good! I baked and decorated with them awake and present! Only on the final part my husband took them out for a walk because they were bored, but other than that they were amazing. So it gets better :-) but slowly and painfully :-). Hang in there and join the club! We've got jackets :-)

yeah, I usually do the 1-2 day before baking and do the icings and decorations during naps, but it's putting it together that's the difficult & time consuming part! Sometimes the kids are wonderful, but you never know who you'll get jekyl jr or hide jr! thanks for the encouragement!

Oh my goodness, I made my first batch of marshmellow fondant and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! In the texture and taste! The fondant covered the cake almost perfectly. I need to work on smoothing the bottom edges of the cake but the rest looks awesome, if I may say so myself! Just decided to play/practice today. I'm doing a baptism cake for my brother and sis-in-law's daughter in 2 weeks. I am excited now instead of anxious of how it will turn out! I could use some advice on how to get tiny cut-out flowers onto the cake without my fingernail prints and crinkles in them? Thanks again for the advice and encouragement.

Beth, I am so happy it worked out! I am not exactly sure I understand what you mean by "getting the flowers onto the cake". Are you having problem attaching them to the cake? Is this when you get the " fingernail prints and crinkles" on them? Or you have problem in general, when you are making them?
If it is the first one, this is not supposed to happen, because the flowers are supposed to be dry when you are attaching them. If I am working with fondant however, I always cut my fingernails beforehand, because sometimes even the smoothing of the cake surface is not easy if you have manicure. If you do that, then you shouldn't have a problem.
If you are leaving fingerprints on the flowers when you are making them, you can try working with gloves or you can work in colder ( air conditioned) room, so the fondant wouldn't "melt" in your hands.
Good luck with the cake, keep me posted!

the flowers or cut-outs get my nail prints or the cut-out gets crinkles in them when I pick them up to put on flower form things. currently my nails do need a trim! Thanks for the advice. I'll let you know how the baptism cake turns out! have a great day!Beth
